The Many Faces of the Archie M. Griffin Grand Ballroom

Some spaces are defined by what they are. Others are defined by what they make possible.

At The Ohio State University’s Ohio Union, the Archie M. Griffin Grand Ballroom is a space that can become something entirely new with each event. Its scale, flexibility and distinctive setting give planners a blank canvas to bring their ideas to life.

Named for two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin, the Grand Ballroom is the largest room in the Ohio Union and one of the largest ballrooms in Central Ohio. Spanning 17,276 square feet, it can also be divided into East and West spaces to accommodate events of different sizes and formats.

The result is a space with many faces, shaped by the people who gather there and the experiences they create.

Here are five ways the ballroom has come to life.

Weddings: A Blank Canvas for a Day to Remember

A room with drapery and soft furniture and many chairs is elegant with live trees and flowers throughout

For Buckeye couples who want to celebrate their connection to Ohio State, the ballroom offers a meaningful campus setting. For others, it’s a beautiful blank canvas ready to reflect their own style.

The ballroom can accommodate an elegant seated dinner — up to 980 banquet style — a lively dance floor, and all the personal touches that make a wedding feel unique. Imagine soft seating for cocktail hour, custom lighting that transforms the room after sunset, dramatic draping overhead or a dance floor where family and friends celebrate late into the evening.

The ballroom’s three chandeliers and expansive windows provide a striking starting point, while its open layout allows couples and their planners to shape the space around their plans. The Ohio Union’s in-house culinary team can also work with couples to develop a menu that complements their celebration and meets everyone’s dietary needs. Meanwhile, pre-function spaces provide ideal spots for buffet tables or guest check-in.

The result? A wedding that feels entirely personal, with the ability to bring family and friends together for a memorable day.

BuckeyeThon: A Ballroom Full of Buckeye Energy

A large ballroom completely filled with people standing shoulder to shoulder looking at more people on the stage. Everyone is dancing with arms held over their head.

When BuckeyeThon takes over the Grand Ballroom, the space becomes a high-energy celebration of community, generosity and the fight against childhood cancer.

As Ohio State’s largest student-run philanthropy, BuckeyeThon brings community together to raise funds for children receiving care through the Hematology, Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit at Columbus’ Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Its signature annual 12-hour dance marathon is the culmination of year-round fundraising and awareness efforts, uniting student participants, patient families and supporters for an unforgettable event.

Staging, lighting effects, music and a packed dance floor help turn the space into an immersive celebration. Performances and activities keep participants engaged, while opportunities to connect with the children and families at the heart of the mission remind everyone why they’re there.

It’s a powerful example of how the Grand Ballroom can accommodate more than a traditional meeting or banquet. With room for large crowds and the infrastructure to support production needs, it can become a stage for a shared purpose — and an experience that stays with participants long after the music stops.

Buckeye Fashion Market: Scarlet and Gray Take the Spotlight

This fall, the Grand Ballroom became the backdrop for a Buckeye retail experience unlike any other.

Hosted by the Buckeye Collection in partnership with Ohio State Athletics, Buckeye Fashion Market brings together officially licensed brands to showcase new apparel, exclusive merchandise and products that celebrate the university. From game day essentials to premium clothing, jewelry, accessories and items for the home, it puts a wide range of Ohio State style in one place.

The ballroom’s expansive layout gave organizers the space to set up different shopping and hospitality areas within one cohesive experience. And with the Ohio Union’s central campus location, the event was easy for students, alumni and fans to access.

Conferences: Bringing Ideas and People Together

For conferences and scientific meetings, the Grand Ballroom offers a different kind of transformation: a large, professional setting designed to bring people together to share knowledge.

Built-in audiovisual capabilities, projection screens and presentation support help keep attendees focused on the content, whether they’re listening to a keynote speaker, watching a presentation or participating in a larger program. For meetings that include research poster sessions, the open floor plan also offers room for attendees to move between displays, connect with presenters and continue conversations beyond the main sessions.

The surrounding Ohio Union adds another advantage. With additional meeting rooms for breakout sessions and several on-site dining options, planners can create a fuller conference experience without requiring guests to travel between multiple locations.

From scientific symposia to professional gatherings and university-wide meetings, the Grand Ballroom offers the scale, versatility and support to help ideas take center stage.

Thanksgiving: Making Room for Community

Sometimes, the most meaningful gatherings are simply about bringing people together. Case in point: Each year, the Grand Ballroom serves as the setting for a community Thanksgiving dinner.

Organized by Ohio State’s Office of International Affairs, the gathering offers more than 1,000 students and community members an opportunity to share a meal and celebrate the spirit of giving thanks.

For this occasion, the ballroom is filled with rows of rectangular dining tables, with guests settling in together and volunteers serving a traditional Thanksgiving spread of turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, vegetables, cranberry sauce, cornbread and pie. The room’s scale makes it possible to welcome a large community around a shared table, while the ballroom setup supports the flow of guests through the meal.

It’s a reminder that a successful event doesn’t have to be elaborate to be memorable. Sometimes, the right space is simply one that makes room for people to connect.

Many people site at long tables, filling a ballroom. It appears as if they are waiting to eat, as rolled silverware sits in front of them.

One ballroom. Countless possibilities.
